Is Bristol taking over the regions?

July 19, 2023

The constant movement and growth within the Bristol legal market might be something some of you are aware of, however there is still a lack of awareness around the success that the South-West has experienced as a Regional Legal Hub in the past decade, especially amongst up-and-coming NQs!

It seems that the attraction of the London legal market can overshadow the Southern regions, but more and more national and international law firms are setting up shop in Bristol. Not only is it proving to be more cost effective than London for law firms, but it also allows firms to expand on their national presence whilst still having a foot in the door with London based clients. The ease of maintaining strong relationships with London clients whilst growing a Bristol base has seen multiple firms enjoy immense growth even post-pandemic, but the Bristol market itself is proving to be increasingly lucrative. With the famous ‘City deal’ being made in 2012 drawing in private investment, Bristol has seen a successful increase in the years leading from it, in 2022 Bristol was named among the top 20 most successful European cities for tech investment. The lucrative landscape that has developed as a result of these investments has naturally led to a busy and progressive market for Bristol based law firms has branded Bristol as a “premium location for legal professionals outside of London”. The city can offer good quality work alongside the highest salaries in the regions, this has led to amazingly high rates of job satisfaction. A rollonfriday survey revealed that out of 8000 participating lawyers across the UK, several Bristol based firms took the top spots such as Burges Salmon (coming first out of 61 firms), Osborne Clarke and TLT.

With legal recruitment not slowing down and the Bristol legal market welcoming ambitious and driven newcomers such as Freeths and Knights, it is the perfect time to take a deeper dive into the Bristol market.
